When Will Prince William Become King? Title and Succession Explained
Prince William is first in line to the throne and already carries six historic titles. Here is when he becomes King, and what name he might reign under.
Prince William has spent his entire life first, or very nearly first, in line to the throne, a position he has held since birth and one that has only grown more concrete since his father’s accession in 2022. The question people actually want answered is simpler: when does this become real?
First in line, and it stays that way
Prince William is currently first in the line of succession to the British throne, immediately behind his father, King Charles III. Barring the extraordinarily unlikely event of him predeceasing his father or being removed from the succession entirely, William will become King the moment Charles dies or, in a scenario with no modern precedent, chooses to abdicate. There is no fixed date and no ceremony required to “confirm” his position beforehand; the crown passes automatically and instantly upon the reigning monarch’s death.
Six titles arrived in a single day
When Charles became King on 8 September 2022, William’s status changed instantly and considerably. As the eldest son of the new monarch, he automatically became Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, a cluster of historic Scottish and English titles that pass automatically to the sovereign’s eldest son under long-standing rules, with no separate ceremony needed. The following day, 9 September, Charles announced a further honour that does require the monarch’s personal decision: creating William Prince of Wales, the title historically reserved for the heir apparent, previously held by Charles himself for over five decades.
Prince of Wales is a gift, not automatic
It’s a common misconception that becoming Prince of Wales happens automatically alongside the other titles. It doesn’t. Unlike the Scottish titles and the Dukedom of Cornwall, which transfer by long-established rule the instant the previous holder becomes monarch, Prince of Wales is created specifically by the sovereign, a personal decision Charles made deliberately and swiftly, within a single day of his own accession, rather than something William received purely by birthright.
The Duchy of Cornwall funds him in the meantime
Alongside the titles, William also inherited control of the Duchy of Cornwall, the centuries-old private estate that has funded the heir to the throne since 1337, giving him a genuinely independent income entirely separate from any future role as King.
What name will he reign under?
Should William become King using his first name, he would be known as King William V, the fifth British monarch to bear the name, following William I, II, III and IV. British monarchs are not required to reign under their first name, King Charles III and King George VI both chose regnal names, but William has given no public indication that he intends to do anything other than reign as William, making King William V the most widely expected outcome whenever that day eventually comes.
Preparing without rushing
William’s public role has grown steadily heavier since 2022, taking on more of his father’s former patronages, representing the Crown on more overseas visits, and increasingly stepping into the kind of institutional, above-politics public presence a future monarch is expected to embody. None of this shortens the timeline; it simply means that by whatever point the succession does happen, William will already be a familiar, practised figure in the role rather than stepping into it cold.

Frequently asked questions
Is Prince William first in line to the throne?
Yes. He has been first in the line of succession since his father, King Charles III, acceded to the throne in September 2022, and was already second in line throughout his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
When will Prince William become king?
There is no fixed date. He will become King automatically the moment King Charles III dies or, in an unprecedented scenario, chooses to abdicate.
Will Prince William be called King William V?
If he reigns under his first name, as expected, he would become King William V, following William I, II, III and IV. British monarchs are not required to use their first name as their regnal name, but William has given no indication he plans to choose a different one.
What titles does Prince William hold now?
Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, and Prince of Wales, the last of which was specifically created for him by King Charles III on 9 September 2022.
Did Prince William automatically become Prince of Wales?
No. Unlike his other titles, which transferred automatically under long-standing rules, Prince of Wales is created at the sovereign’s personal discretion. Charles made the decision within a day of his own accession.
Does Prince William already have an income as heir?
Yes, through the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate that has funded the heir to the throne since 1337 and which he now controls, entirely separate from any future role as King.
