Of all the jewels in the royal collection, none captures the imagination quite like the tiara. It is the jewel of fairy tales and state banquets, of wedding mornings and grand entrances — and the rules around it are every bit as fascinating as the sparkle itself.

What makes a tiara royal

A tiara is, at its simplest, an ornamental band worn on the head — but a royal tiara is rarely simple. Many are historic pieces with names and stories, passed down through generations, set with diamonds and coloured stones that have been reset and reimagined over the decades. To wear one is to wear a piece of family history.

The “something borrowed” tradition

One of the most charming royal customs is the lending of tiaras. A bride marrying into the family is often lent a tiara for her wedding day — a gesture both practical and sentimental, and the source of endless delighted speculation about which piece, with what history, she will choose. The tiara becomes, quite literally, the “something borrowed”.

When tiaras are worn

There is etiquette, too. By long tradition, tiaras are reserved for the grandest occasions — white-tie events, state banquets and weddings — and, again traditionally, are worn by married women. The old line has it that a tiara signals a head that is “spoken for”. Like much royal etiquette, the convention is observed more gently now than it once was.

Why they still enchant

In an age of relaxed dress codes, the tiara endures precisely because it belongs to another world — one of ceremony, history and unhurried glamour. It is the jewel that turns a woman into a fairy tale for an evening, and that is a magic no amount of modern fashion has managed to replace.

Details of specific pieces and their histories are drawn from widely published accounts and can vary between sources.
